ABOUT YOUR CONSULTANT

Mr Ken Emmanuel
Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist
BSc (Hons), MB BS, MRCOG, MRCGP
Certificate in Advanced Gynaecological Endoscopy

I have been rated as 'excellent' by the women to whom I provide care. This is very important to me and encourages me to do the best I can for the women who kindly choose to come to see me for their gynaecology care.

I have been a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist since 2006, having trained in London and the South West. I obtained my Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2003, and also obtained my Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 2016. I am one of the few specialists in obstetrics and gynaecology in the country who has dual accreditation from the Royal Colleges (CCT - Completion of Core Training). I am currently a consultant practising within the NHS in Wales where I teach and train doctors in obstetrics and gynaecological surgery and clinical management.

During my early training in obstetrics and gynaecology, I worked at some of London's most prestigious hospitals including Queen Charlotte's and the Royal Free Hospitals before embarking on specialist registrar training in the South West region including teaching hospitals in Southampton, Poole, Bournemouth, Portsmouth and Swindon.

During training, I undertook a fellowship of advanced training at St Bartholomew's and The Royal London Hospitals, and Australia in Sydney and Perth, in the field of complex laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis, fertility surgery, hysteroscopic uterine surgery and early pregnancy assessment. Whilst in Sydney, I worked with specialists with expertise in endometriosis and pelvic pain management.

On completion of training, I was appointed as consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist in Birmingham in 2007 where I was lead for laparoscopic surgery, specialist centre endometriosis, emergency gynaecology and early pregnancy. I was an honorary consultant for the University of Birmingham and became a regional trainer for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists national specialist skills modules in hysteroscopic, laparoscopic and benign surgery, as well as early pregnancy and emergency gynaecology.

After spending four years in Birmingham developing a referral centre for advanced endometriosis surgery, I was invited to work at Benenden Hospital as lead surgeon for hysteroscopic (keyhole) womb surgery, laparoscopic (abdominal keyhole) surgery and severe endometriosis. I also worked within the Benenden Fertility Centre and undertook all aspects of fertility care.

During my time in private practice, I obtained the training and qualifications to become a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners. This additional training not only increased my medical knowledge greatly but also gave me the skills to be more empathetic and a better listener of my patients.

Since this time I have built on my experience and undertaken travelling clinical fellowships to Germany working with Prof Matthias Korell to further learn more advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques concerning severe endometriosis. I have also worked with and been trained by nationally and internationally recognised experts in the fields of endometriosis and pelvic floor surgery. I have also been the HFEA Person Responsible for Benenden Fertility Centre and ran my own private gynaecology ultrasound scan services for women wanting pregnancy reassurance and screening for gynaecological problems including fibroids, ovarian cysts, cancer screening, and pelvic pain.

I was first recognised to undertake private work by all the common insurance providers in 2006, and I undertake all the common NHS procedures within the private sector where funded.

My educational and professional qualifications include:

Bachelor of Science with Honours in Anatomy and Developmental Biology (BSc Hons)

Bachelor of Medicine (MB)

Bachelor of Surgery (BS)

Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG)

Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP)

Certificate in Advanced Gynaecological Endoscopy
